Functional Skills
Our two day per week Functional Skills programme is designed to support learners within an alternative provision setting by embedding English and Maths into practical, vocational learning. Rather than teaching these subjects in isolation, the course integrates literacy and numeracy into real-life workshop activities and vocational projects. This approach helps learners understand how these essential skills are used in everyday situations and future employment, making learning more meaningful, engaging, and accessible.
Throughout the programme, students develop their reading, writing, speaking, listening, and mathematical skills while taking part in hands on vocational tasks. For example, learners may read instructions, complete job sheets, measure materials, calculate quantities, or discuss safety procedures as part of their practical work. This contextualised approach allows learners to see the purpose of Functional Skills and encourages them to apply what they learn directly within the workshop environment.
The course places a strong emphasis on building confidence, independence, and communication skills. Learners are encouraged to explain their ideas, work collaboratively with peers, and reflect on their progress. Activities are designed to support different learning styles and abilities, ensuring that students can develop their skills at a pace that suits them while still being challenged to improve.
Progress is monitored through a range of practical tasks, written activities, discussions, and observations, allowing instructors to track each learner’s development in both English and Maths. Students are supported in improving their ability to follow instructions, record information, solve problems, and communicate effectively, skills that are essential not only for academic success but also for employment and everyday life.
By embedding Functional Skills within a vocational pathway, this programme aims to help learners recognise the value of English and Maths in real world contexts. The course supports personal growth, promotes positive attitudes towards learning, and prepares students for further education, training, or employment by equipping them with the fundamental skills needed for the workplace and beyond.
